If you could marry your current partner,would you?
No.

But not because I don’t love her. I do. We would still be a couple. We would live together. Nothing would change except our legal status as a married couple.

We would save a ton of money in taxes and tuition that way.

Her income is considerably more than mine. If we were never married, and I had sole legal custody of our kids, I would not only have no income tax on my income, but I’d qualify for other benefits and tax cuts, and my daughter’s in-state tuition to her college would be a lot cheaper too. Being a “single” father of three kids at my income level would save me about $8k in income taxes every year, and $15k in tuition for my daughter each year she’s in college.

If there is a large disparity between your income and your boyfriend/girlfriend’s income, I’d recommend running the numbers before you get legally married to see if it makes sense financially to stay unmarried, particularly if you are thinking of having kids.
