<p>When a company is public, sometimes you can figure this out exactly. &nbsp;This is because major stockholders, and officers of the company, have to report their exact ownership amounts and all transactions with the SEC.</p>
<p>Now, Bill Gates is a special case because he's been actively selling his MSFT shares or donating them to his charity foundation. &nbsp;One news report from last year suggests he might not own any shares at all by the middle of next year: https://qz.com/1054323/bill-gates-will-have-no-microsoft-msft-shares-by-mid-2019-at-his-current-rate/</p>
<p>There are sites that repackage the SEC information, but it is all available online at EDGAR, the SEC's filing site. &nbsp;We start at https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html? and search for the MSFT ticker symbol.</p>
<p>The default listing excludes ownership transactions; if we switch the search to *only* ownership transactions, we get a list of form 4's filed by Microsoft and its insiders:</p>

<p>There are a lot of people there, so probably we're better off starting over and searching for Bill by name: William Gates. &nbsp;&nbsp;We can see just his filings, although they cover many companies, not just Microsoft:</p>

<p>OK, so drilling down a little further, here is his form 5 reporting disposition of MSFT stock in the year ending 6/30/2017</p>

<p>It says Gates disposed of 64,000,000 shares at a price of $0 (that is, he gave them away) on 6/6, and has 102,992,934 shares remaining. &nbsp;That's the only transaction. &nbsp;He didn't sell any for cash.</p>

<p>So, during that 12-month period he owned &nbsp;166,992,934 shares which were paid a total of $1.53 in dividends per share. &nbsp;That gives us $255,499,189.02 in dividend income from his stake in MSFT.</p>
<p>He may also have earned a small amount in compensation as a board member; I didn't look in MSFT's yearly filing which would have that information.</p>
