When a company is public, sometimes you can figure this out exactly. This is because major stockholders, and officers of the company, have to report their exact ownership amounts and all transactions with the SEC.

Now, Bill Gates is a special case because he's been actively selling his MSFT shares or donating them to his charity foundation. One news report from last year suggests he might not own any shares at all by the middle of next year: https://qz.com/1054323/bill-gates-will-have-no-microsoft-msft-shares-by-mid-2019-at-his-current-rate/

There are sites that repackage the SEC information, but it is all available online at EDGAR, the SEC's filing site. We start at https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html? and search for the MSFT ticker symbol.

The default listing excludes ownership transactions; if we switch the search to *only* ownership transactions, we get a list of form 4's filed by Microsoft and its insiders:

https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0000789019&type=&dateb=&owner=include&count=40

There are a lot of people there, so probably we're better off starting over and searching for Bill by name: William Gates. We can see just his filings, although they cover many companies, not just Microsoft:

https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&CIK=0000902012&type=&dateb=&owner=only&count=40

OK, so drilling down a little further, here is his form 5 reporting disposition of MSFT stock in the year ending 6/30/2017

https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/789019/000122520817013968/xslF345X03/doc5.xml

It says Gates disposed of 64,000,000 shares at a price of $0 (that is, he gave them away) on 6/6, and has 102,992,934 shares remaining. That's the only transaction. He didn't sell any for cash.

Microsoft did pay dividends during that period, though. https://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/msft/dividend-history shows

5/16/2017 Cash 0.39

2/14/2017 Cash 0.39

11/15/2016 Cash 0.39

8/16/2016 Cash 0.36

So, during that 12-month period he owned 166,992,934 shares which were paid a total of $1.53 in dividends per share. That gives us $255,499,189.02 in dividend income from his stake in MSFT.

He may also have earned a small amount in compensation as a board member; I didn't look in MSFT's yearly filing which would have that information.
