I grew up drinking well water and after needing to have our well drilled out several times because the water table dried up, it isn't a cheap process. It also isn't very environmentally friendly because you have to tear up the Earth and use fossil fuels to run the drill truck. </p>\n<p>As an alternative rainwater can be collected with pretty minimal supplies and used pretty efficiently. The biggest issue that would come into play is storage.
