Before, they were governed by a document called the \"Articles of Confederation\".
\n

\n
There was much debate among the different states regarding how big the federal government should be. On the one hand, it was necessary to establish a union, but the states also did not want to cede power to the new national institutions. In addition, they feared that a too strong federal government would end up subjugating the states.
\n

\n
The result was that the Articles established a very weak national state, to the point that it had neither president nor Supreme Court, only Congress existed.
\n

\n
The new country could issue currency, direct the postal service, negotiate with other countries and not much more than that. The rest was in charge of the states.
\n

\n
That implied that, for example, the federal government could not collect taxes and there were not even national armed forces. The government was financed through the states and also resorted to them for defense. The issue is that states could refuse to provide help if they wanted, so many times, the nation was either financially or without military capacity.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f3lebmd9x","appParentAuthor":"frt32222","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
