The center of the earth is very hot.
\n
Think of the earth like an onion with all its different layers. Some layers are thicker than others and it is at it's hottest in the middle.
\n
The earth is made up of different cores The inner core is about 5000 to 6000 degrees and is made up of mostly iron metal melts at 10 000 degrees Fahrenheit. It is hot enough to melt metal but the weight of the earth pushing down on it keeps it in a solid form.
\n
The outer core is made up of iron, nickel sulfur and oxygen and is around 4000-5000 degrees. The liquid metal creates earths magnetic pull.
\n
The next is the lower mantle which is between 3000 and 4000 degrees and is made up of iron, magnesium ,silicon oxygen with some aluminium. Pressure again is at play keeping it solid.
\n
The upper mantle is made up of two parts, the lower part is made up of solid rock and liquid magma. This temperature varies but is around 1400 degrees.
\n
The crust is what we see and know as the surface ans is around 22 degrees.
\n
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fkg3aw99x","appParentAuthor":"chrelye1989","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

json_metadata | "{"app":"Musing","appTags":["Life"],"appCategory":"Life","appTitle":"True or False? The center of the Earth is very hot. Why?","appBody":"
This is kind of a tricky question. Theoretically, it is true. This is because of the fact that a lot of work has been done concerning the matter in labs but no one has ever even tried to drill through the Earth, so by virtue of lack of proof, it is just a theory.
\n
But if the Earth's core was actually hot, there are three possible causes of the heat.
\n
\n
DECAY OF RADIOACTIVE ELEMENTS: The Earth is laden with a stupendous amount of materials. Some of these materials are radioactive. This means that they tend to decay and emit energy. This energy is converted into thermal energy in the Earth and such leads to an increase in the core temperature of the planet. Considering how many megatons of radioactive elements are present in the Earth, it's a very viable possibility.
\n
FRICTIONAL FORCES PRODUCED BY DENSE METALS SINKING DEEPER INTO THE EARTH: It is hypothesized that the Earth's core is composed of iron and other dense metals. Thus the iron rich substances scattered through out the earth are constantly sinking towards the core. The frictional force they produce is said to generate about 2,000 kelvins or about 3,000F.
\n
RESIDUAL HEAT FROM THE EARTH'S FORMATION: Heat can be transferred through three ways. radiation, convection and conduction. Radiation is the fastest of the three while conduction and convection are significantly slower. Thus it is hypothesized that there is still some heat in the Earth from when it was formed. The only means of losing this heat would be through conduction or convection and as I said, they are quite slow.
\n
\n
These are three possible reasons for why the Earth's core would be super hot but it cannot be proven so as I said earlier, it is all hypothetical
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fkg3aw99x","appParentAuthor":"chrelye1989","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
