This new doctrine, promoted by Jesus is supposed to substitute the old β€œan-eye-for-an-eye” law from the Old Testament, but for many it is intended to be read proverbially or allegorically.
\n
I’d say that even non-Christians can and have practice that doctrine. It can be assumed as a non-violent, passive-resistance kind of ideology and it has bred some historical leaders and movements that brought significant transformations to our world.
\n
When it is read literally, of course, chances are that not everyone will have the character and peace of mind to sustain that kind of offense or aggression. Most people would react violently (in self-defense) in case of physical aggression. I’d say that depending on the aggressor and what I did to deserve or not that aggression, I may offer the other cheek.
\n
I think I have done it a couple of times in instances when I have been the offender and the slap became the consequence of my offense, in which case, I had no choice but to accept it. Never have I been slapped by a stranger or enemy. Figuratively, I have offered the other cheek quite a few times. Friends, relatives, even my children have, at some point, failed or offended me and I have not felt the need to reciprocate or take reprisal. Whenever they have needed me, I have been there, forgetting and forgiving the offense.
\n
There are some relatives, though, and some ex-friends whom I have sworn not to help if they ever need me again. But, the opportunity has not presented yet, so, I don’t know if I will keep my word. My mother says I’ll probably forget about it and provide help if I can. It is a real moral and ethical dilemma that some people can categorically settle, while other may subject to contingencies.
\n
In any case, I think this is a valuable teaching that should be embraced by most people around the world. Most of the conflicts that have been avoided, from a simple argument with a relative, friend or neighbor to a global political and military crisis, have been possible because one of the parties decided to turn their back to the conflict, offer the other cheek or just ignore the offense.
\n
If everybody reacted instinctively and viscerally to every single offense, we would have been extinct by now.
\n

","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"p36dxkmyw","appParentAuthor":"citimillz","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}"

Absolutely. I know quite a bit how detrimental offering the other cheek can be. In a culture like ours, where being honest and a pacifist is considered to be *pendejo* (dumb), people take advantage of whoever practices that.
Very often we have to stand up and avoid the hit, at least, if we want to continue in the game.
You have avery happy new year's eve celebration. My best wishes for you and your beautiful family.
