If consumers believe that a company is harmful in some way(to the environment or to people) then they feel justified participating in illegal activities, such as shoplifting, piracy or hacking, etc.
\n
People are much more willing to do something that risks their own integrity if they believe a company is unethical. And this desire to punish a harmful brand occurs even when the consumer does not personally have a bad experience with the company.
\n
Typically, people feel emotional consequences when they engage in unethical behaviour, but when the same people perceive that the counterpart/company is cheating then they feel justified to their act of unethical conduct, so negative feelings, such as guilt, are absent in such people because people feel that the company/counterpart is cheating customers. People do feel morally justified in such cases.
\n
The desire to punish companies/brands perceived as harmful also reflects in the real world. People/consumers rate how harmful they perceive a variety of different industries, such as pharmacies, supermarkets and home improvement stores. On average, the more harmful the ratings, the greater the rates of theft are in these industries.
\n
If people perceive a company/brand as harmful, they might feel justified in being unethical. Therefore a reputation should be built that allows consumers and businesses to be on the same side.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"p3qa7gysp","appParentAuthor":"groynes","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
