What was the darkest movie you’ve ever seen?

One of the darkest movies I have seen in a long time would have to be Stoker, a 2013 psychological thriller starring Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, and Mia Wasikowska. It's also the first English language film of Old Boy writer and director Park Chan-wook, which is another disturbingly dark movie.

The film was very intense, suspenseful, and dark family drama. It has been described as a gothic fairytale and borrows a lot of its themes and plot devices from classic Hitchcock thrillers with it's very charismatic villain and a hero that's almost as mentally unstable, if not as evil, as it's villain.

What I find very dark about this movie is the fact that the unspeakable and evil acts are committed by regular people, even seemingly innocent young women. Sure, the main villain is mentally unstable and has been institutionalized for most of his life, but when he was presented in the story, he was seen as a smart, likable, and handsome man. If not for the evil things he does in secret, no one would think of him as a villain.

Then, you have a young hero, who turned out to be as unstable as the villain, and capable of equally heinous acts. Even the supporting characters, who may not have committed evil acts, still allow the evil around them to continue. All these characters explore the human capacity to commit evil, when given the right opportunities or motivation. To make it worse, it's not one stranger hurting another, most of the characters in the film are family. And that makes it a really dark film.
