In Islam, Friday is the day when you're supposed to rest and attend prayer at the mosque. In Judaism, Saturday is the day of the sabbath, the same thing as the prayer day in Islam. In Christianity, Sunday is the day when you don't work and go to church. The five-day work week is a modern invention many countries have adopted to give workers more rest and families more time to spend together.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fkt333zv5","appParentAuthor":"dhiraj3218","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

Interesting way of asking your question. You know, for Canadians, American, Australian even myself, a Malaysian. You are a foreign person too. The Idea of "foreign" should not exist on the Internet, since it's global and borderless.

The Idea of a Weekend has its roots in Judeo-Christianity. But the implementation of it starts from when Employers begin to respect worker rights to rest and personal errands. (The first account was when a US Cotton Mill decides to let their Jewish worker to observe the Sabbath).

It's the idea that if Bosses treat their workers right, the workers will for the Bosses right. Which makes sense..

In Germany, a typical office hours runs only 5 hours. So say if they start at 8am, the day ends at 1pm. Considering they are the most powerful Industrial Nation in existence in terms of productivity, maybe they are doing something right...

Saturday and Sunday are the holy days for Christianity and Judaism. The contemporary Western idea of a "weekend" first arose in Britain as the result of a deal between factory workers and their bossess, then the practice spread to other English-speaking countries where the dominant religious groups were also Christian or Jewish

You can learn more about the history of various workweeks around the world here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workweek_and_weekend
