How does video monetization work on Youtube?

If you are a content creator or you want to be one, and you are looking for a way to earn money as 'Youtuber', here we show you the requirements to monetize Youtube videos in 2018.

As it is known, the most popular video platform in the world offers users the possibility to monetize their videos through advertising. Thanks to this, many 'Youtubers' have found in the platform the way to make a living uploading videos.

However, for some time now Youtube has presented problems that affect the income obtained by the "content creators", due to problems with the advertisers of the platform, which do not allow their ads to be shown in certain videos that contain questionable material.

In order to improve the revenue of its creators and prevent "bad users" affect the Youtube community, Google has chosen to modify its requirements for users who want to earn income from their videos.

Since April 2017, Youtube established a minimum requirement of 10 thousand views in videos for those who want to be part of the Youtube Partner Program (YPP); however, this has not been enough to know if a channel complies or not with the rules of the Community.

Therefore, since January 16, 2018, the new requirements to monetize Youtube videos are:

4 thousand hours of playback time during the last 12 months.

Have at least 1,000 subscribers.

This way, new users of the platform will have it harder if they want to earn money on Youtube.

As for the channels that already monetized their videos, they have until February 20, 2018 to meet the new requirements of Youtube. If you don't have 4,000 hours of playback and have at least 1,000 subscribers by this date, your videos will no longer be monetized. They will be evaluated again when they meet the requirements.

This measure will affect a large number of channels; however, according to Youtube, the earnings of 99% of these users did not exceed $100 during the last year. Negligible figures if we compare them with the earnings of the best paid Youtubers of 2017, which generated millions of dollars with their videos.

And while meeting these requirements can be difficult for most new users, it's not impossible, nor do they guarantee that a channel is suitable for monetization with Adsense.

From Youtube, they plan to have more conversations with content creators who have large channels on the platform, in order to avoid problems that may affect the community or advertisers, such as the recent incident with the Vlogger Logan Paul.

Manual review of Google Preferred channels

Google Preferred is the Youtube program where are the most popular channels of the platform, and where advertisers can place their ads directly in the videos of their choice and thus reach their target audience.

From now on, the channels that belong to Google Preferred will be checked manually by the Youtube team, and only if they are eligible, they will be able to continue belonging to this "VIP" program. In this way, they guarantee that they comply with their requirements and friendly advertising rules.

It is expected that all U.S. channels and videos that belong to this program will be reviewed until mid-February, and before March for the rest of the countries.
