What you see at your job, in your family, at your university or even in your country doesn't give a reliable impression of the world at large. On the other hand, the number of females might be underestimated because some parents will register boys but not girls in certain countries, India and China in particular.
\n
And of course, men start with a larger majority at birth, but they die at an earlier age. There would be more women if there was more violence or if the world's population growth slowed down.
\n

\n
There are significant differences between countries. According to the CIA World Factbook, Djibouti has 84 men per 100 women, while Qatar has 341 men per 100 women. Most of these men in Qatar are foreign workers, of course. Some major countries with a male majority are Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan and China, while Russia, Ukraine, Hungary and Kazakhstan have a female majority.
\n
The map is from Wikipedia, based on data from 2012. Red represents more females, blue more males than the world average of 1.01 males/females.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"pksbxvjxw","appParentAuthor":"dumnebari","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
