Oftentimes, I would warn them to not spam my blog, and explain to them that what they were doing is considered spam on our platform. Some were understanding, most were not.</p>\n<p>I ran giveaways for a while, as an initiative to reward users for combating spam with their vote. This didn't pan well either, because small accounts were worried about retaliation.</p>\n<p>Now I generally just ignore spam, or respond with a sarcastic comment (increases user engagement ). I find that if you don't upvote them, or respond in a productive way, they will eventually give up on spamming your account. Their sole purpose to to trick you into a vote. Education in this sense is useless, because they fully know what they are doing.</p>\n<p>If you notice a major spam ring, there are accounts dedicated to combating them, such as steemcleaners. They take swift action to destroy these accounts, and their quite efficient at it. If you notice a major ring, it's best to contact the administrative team so that they can take appropriate action. Involving yourself directly into a spam ring, could result in disaster if you don't have the resources to combat them.</p>\n<p>I consider there to be some pretty specific reasons as to why people spam on the blockchain. The major reason is to gain profit, this much is obvious, but why don't they go about this in a more traditional manner? Likely it is due to language barriers, and lack of talent. This is a rather simple explanation, but it's hard for me to consider this in any other way. Greed, lack of motivation, laziness, lack of creativity, are likely all present with the Steem spammer.</p>\n<p>To answer your question in a direct manner, I think spam education is kind of a waste of time. A genuine person, who is not purposely spamming, should be able to figure out what they are doing wrong without much directive. If they lack the ability to do so, they might not be a suitable candidate to contribute quality content to the blockchain at all, and we are better off without them. This might seem harsh, and perhaps it is, but we are trying to break away from the low grade content found within the masses of other social media networks.
