It has to some degree brought all of us to STEEM. In some people's eyes, the only thing better than earning money is earning more.
\n
And so, a 50-50 payout may very well improve voting behavior among some STEEM users. But will it be enough to balance the potential loss creators could see?
\n
That's the question I keep asking myself. I also wonder will the decrease in post or comment earnings be made up in curation earnings? My guess is, for some, specifically those on the higher end of SP, yes, it will. Many don't post already, but curate through some form of auto voting, on their own or through a curation trail. For them, they're not likely to do more curation since they're already maxing out, but will earn more for it.
\n
dApps that upvote posts will find themselves in a similar situation—earning more without significantly doing more.
\n
So will bid bots, who get the curation rewards for what they upvote.
\n
And those farming bots that consist of dozens to hundreds of accounts will be able to make more, too, if they have the RCs to make a dent in things.
\n
But will the majority of the smaller users, the red fish and the minnows, the ones who comprise the largest amount of users on the STEEM platform, by far, see an increase?
\n
That I'm not so sure of. The manual curator probably will not. Those with less than 500 SP, probably won't. Unless they manage to get on the radar of the high SP accounts, just like they need to do now, it's no likelier that they will be making any more from their posts than they are now, but will end up with 1/3 less.
\n
There simply aren't enough dolphins, orcas and whales to upvote even just the red fishes and minnows that regularly produce decent content. And are these higher STEEM creatures likely to break out of their own voting circles, and self-voting when they can make even more money on curation? Why would they?
\n
If spreading their vote among those they believe quality content is not something they do, will a 33% increase in curation rewards be enough? Will that stop them from delegating their STEEM or running their bid bots? Not likely. There's not been a call for any of that to cease, by the way, just declarations that behavior will change, inferring that it will be less profitable to delegate or run bid bots than it will be to curate.
\n
I can't see how that will be true. If those receiving delegations are making more curation rewards, the delegator can ask for higher rent. If the bid bots are making more money in curation, why would they stop running? No can reasonably guarantee or expect that to be the case. There needs to be more to this than just the prospect of greater curation earnings. There has to be a genuine desire on the part of the user to actually curate.
\n
Which is another thing. I don't believe this is going to raise the amount of eyes on a post significantly, either. I don't think it's going to increase engagement. Both of those things are what creators also want, in addition to some form of compensation for the work they've put in.
\n
So, those are my doubts, and they're just as viable as any other positive assertion about the 50-50 proposal. I'm afraid, we're just not going to know without doing it.
\n
But, by all means, test the proposal on the testnet. See if it can result in higher payouts for creators because it causes more people to vote. I'm not sure that's going to reflect what happens in the real world., though. Not in this case. Not when there's more work involved with curation. Not when it will be just as easy to do what they're doing now, but with more rewards.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fk7jazl9x","appParentAuthor":"jassennessaj","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
