I remember learning a few back then in high school during my chemistry classes. The type of separation method used depends on the quantities involved in the reaction. When physical substances are missed together, usually no new substances are formed and so you use physical separation techniques. Example is the salt and water mixture. </p><p>In same vein, when chemical substances are mixed, usually a new substance is formed. For example is the reaction of iron (II) oxide with air. A new substance iron (III) oxide is formed. </p><p>Lets get down to how to separate salt from water without losing both substances. Remember that salt +water = salt solution. Using the chemical substances to illustrate, we have: </p><p> 2NaCl + 2H2O = NaOH +HCl </p><p>When added to water the Na+ molecule of NaCl is attracted to the oxygen molecule of the water while the Cl- side is attracted to the hydrogen molecule of the water. </p><p>In separating salt from water, all you need do is pour the salt solution into a pot, apply heat. The water will begin to evaporate slowly as the temperature increases, leaving the salt behind. The evaporating water can be channelled through a distiller to cool and then to another beaker after cooling.
