The latest addition of Smallville (2001-11) and Man of Steel (2013) has done wonders in adding more value to it.
\n
I don't really need to explain Superman's origin story since its so popular and everybody probably knows it. Nevertheless the aspect that he was born superhuman and had to grow up in an alien world needs to be mentioned. It is surprising to find how well this story is understood by people even when we have so little in common with it.
\n

\n
(Free image from wallpaper cave)
\n
Here are some of the things about Superman's origin story that I have always loved:
\n
1. The fact that he had the opportunity to live amongst humans.
\n
2. His ability to cope with a world that is so fragile for him. In his origin stories you get to learn how Clark Kent had to even learn to hold things so that he didn't break them. There were occasions where he accidentally hurt his parents due to his super strength.
\n
3. We also sometimes forget that both his body and mind are super. This means that even his senses are always dialed to the nine and thus are super acute. For example, he can hear someone in distress, even hundreds of miles away ........ this always made me wonder how he kept up with saving them all the time. Another thing is that he can see things that others can't - for example he can see that somebody has a last stage of cancer when they don't even know it themselves..... that is quite a burden to live with.
\n
4. Superman was the first comicbook superhero
\n
5. He was also the superhero whose character has been most heavily experimented on, in the entire history of comic books. He has been casted as both strong and weak, good and evil, human and alien, living and dead, angel and demon, mutant and normal, innocent and convicted, etc.
\n
6. The silver age Superman character was created in a manner that he was able outmatch the enemy and eventually triumph every single time. This created a situation where he literally had no upper limits on his power. This is the most powerful iteration of any superhero ever created. Imagine a guy who would always win, no matter what..... They actually had to kill his character several times just to keep things interesting, since an unbeatable character grows boring with time.
\n
The reasons are pretty much endless and impossible for me to write them all. Nevertheless the above points cover some major aspects of his origin and life, that have made the story of Superman so popular.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"pk4r52ndx","appParentAuthor":"holovision","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
