You may feel disoriented and have difficulty paying attention, remembering and making decisions.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Confusion can appear quickly or slowly over time, depending on the cause. Many times it lasts little and disappears, other times it is permanent and incurable. It may be associated with delirium or dementia.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The confusion is more frequent in older adults and often occurs during a hospitalization.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Some people who are confused may have strange or unusual behavior or may act aggressively.</p>\n<p>The confusion can be caused by different health problems such as:</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Drug or alcohol poisoning</p>\n<p>Brain tumor</p>\n<p>Cranial trauma or head injury (concussion)</p>\n<p>Fever</p>\n<p>Hydroelectrolyte imbalance</p>\n<p>Disease in an elderly person, such as loss of brain function (dementia)</p>\n<p>Illness in a person with existing neuropathy as a stroke</p>\n<p>Infections</p>\n<p>Lack of sleep (sleep deprivation)</p>\n<p>Hypoglycemia</p>\n<p>Low oxygen levels (for example, due to chronic lung disorders)</p>\n<p>Medicines</p>\n<p>Nutritional deficiencies, particularly deficiency of niacin, thiamine, or vitamin B12</p>\n<p>Seizures</p>\n<p>Sudden drop in body temperature (hypothermia)</p>\n<p>Home care</p>\n<p>A good way to find out if a person is confused is to ask for their name, age and date. If he responds with insecurity or incorrectly, he suffers from confusion.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>If the person does not usually suffer from confusion, call the health care provider.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>A confused person should not be left alone. For safety, he may need someone close to him to calm him down and protect him from hurting himself. On rare occasions, the health care professional can order physical restrictions.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>To help a confused person:</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Introduce yourself always, no matter how well that person has ever known you.</p>\n<p>Remind him frequently of his location.</p>\n<p>Place a clock and a calendar near the person.</p>\n<p>Talk about current events and plans for the day.</p>\n<p>Try to keep the environment calm, silent and peaceful.</p>\n<p>In case of sudden confusion due to hypoglycaemia (for example, for a medication for diabetes), the person should take a sweet drink or eat a sweet snack.
