Is this true? I've been meaning to call them and find out for a few days but I keep forgetting and since I'm thinking about it I figured I would ask on here.\n\nHe's saying that I have to give them a spare key and that they put it inside of the remote starter or something? Is there any truth to this? I don't have a spare key and this is why I'm wondering!\n\nThanks","appDepth":1,"musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"question"}" |

The quick answer: no.
\n
Most cars take about 30 seconds to warm the engine up to the temperature needed to drive, even when it's extremely cold.
\n
It is therefore good to let it run a little, but not necessary to wait five or even ten minutes before taking the road.
\n
In fact, in the long run, it can even become harmful. A vehicle that idles too long promotes the dilution of the engine oil. The best way to warm up your vehicle is to drive the vehicle very quietly until its temperature rises and allows normal use.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f3l4g54cq","appParentAuthor":"hnub","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

json_metadata | "{"app":"musing/1.1","appTags":["car","cars","winter","vehicles","question"],"appCategory":"car","appTitle":"How to warm up the car in winter?","appBody":"
It depends on whether your car has an anti-theft immobilizer installed. Most modern cars do.
\n
Basically, the key has a chip in it. Before the car starts, the engine control computer talks to that chip. If the key doesn't have the right code, the engine control computer won't deliver some essential component of running the car (fuel or spark). This prevents anyone from ever being able to hotwire your car, or otherwise get the engine running without the correct key. Instead of having to break each manufacturer's code (which can range from fairly easy to mathematically nearly impossible), remote start installers use a spare key with a correctly coded chip to start the car.
\n
You can tell whether your car is equipped with an immobilizer several ways. First, most cars so equipped will have some kind of sticker on a window, typically a key-and-engine design. Second, you could ask a locksmith or a dealer. If they want a few bucks to cut a new key, it doesn't have the chip. If they want $100 or more, you're probably dealing with an immobilizer. Yes, if you want the remote start and your car is equipped with an immobilizer, you'll have to shell out the money to get a spare key - there's really no way around it.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f3l4g54cq","appParentAuthor":"hnub","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
