Comparing the two would be like comparing apples and oranges. However, with that said, as someone who was introduced to the series through the 2005 revival, I would have to say that I like the modern Doctor Who better.
\n
First, as a modern viewer, I find the effects on the classic series a little too clunky, for my tastes. A few seasons into the modern series, I tried to watch the classic series to see if I would like it. However, the bad special effects just make it difficult for me to enjoy the old series, especially since most times, I end up laughing at it, rather than connecting with the characters or feeling the emotions evoked on screen. To be honest, this is really a problem I have with most old sci-fi movies and TV series, so it's not just a Doctor Who issue.
\n
Second, another reason why I like the modern series more is the fright factor. There has been several episodes in the new series where I found myself genuinely scared and on the edge of my seat. Some of these episodes include Blink, The Empty Child, and Midnight. Compared to the classic series, I really find myself baffled by how viewers found villains like the Daleks and Cybermen scary.
\n
Third, I also found the modern version of the Doctors far more interesting. From the guilt-ridden 9th Doctor, to quirky 11th Doctor, and even the very un-doctorike War Doctor, and now the first female Doctor to ride the Tardis, I just think that the modern Who has a more interesting mix. Of course, my personal favorite, the 10th Doctor has also been a joy to watch, even as he subverts a lot of what we thought was the Doctor's traditional \"rules\".
\n
And finally, the modern series has also delivered a lot of creative and unique ways to present it's story, which I find very entertaining. From the Heaven Sent episode, a one-man episode which starred the Doctor alone, to the Blink episode that didn't feature the Doctor or his companion except in a few small scenes. There were also a lot of interesting ways used to wrap up a companion's storyline, from a companion \"stealing\" the Doctor's Tardis for a little bit, to another companion staying trapped in the past and making the most out of it. I just find the storytelling to be more compelling in the modern series.
\n
With that said, others might actually find the reasons why I think the modern series is better to be what turns them off the 2005 revival. For example, there are some who would say that they like the more straight-laced sci-fi treatment of the classic series over the bits of horror-fantasy infused in the modern series, or how the classic villains are much scarier than the modern ones.
\n
So, which is better? As I said, it's really an apples and oranges situation. But, if you prefer the more mature Doctor Who that is scarier and has much better special effects, then the modern series is better for you.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f377gged5","appParentAuthor":"holovision","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
