The word is gotten from the Arabian expression \"al-kimia,\" which alludes to the arrangement of the Stone or Elixir by the Egyptians. The Arabic root \"kimia\" originates from the Coptic \"khem\" that suggested the fruitful dark soil of the Nile delta. Exclusively and hieroglyphically, the word alludes to the dull riddle of the primordial or First Matter (the Khem).

Streamlined, the points of the chemists were triple: to locate the Stone of Knowledge (The Philosophers' Stone), to find the medium of Eternal Youth and Health, and to find the transmutation of metals. To the medieval chemist's mind the distinctive components were nevertheless a similar unique substance in fluctuating degrees of virtue. Gold was the most perfect of all and silver pursued intently.

In the beginning of alchemy, the galactic indications of the planets were additionally utilized as catalytic images. At that point in the time of medieval oppression and concealment each chemist imagined his own mystery images. Con artists, quacks and cheats assumed control and alchemy progressed toward becoming, alongside divination and black magic, notorious for misrepresentation and coercion. In the eighteenth century researchers attempted to pry free the genuine accomplishments in science, pharmacology and medication from this befuddling cornucopia of science and enchantment.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fk8t2gkl5","appParentAuthor":"ishewole","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

json_metadata | "{"app":"Musing","appTags":["Question"],"appCategory":"Question","appTitle":"What is alchemy?","appBody":"
Alchemy is basically chemsitry from medieval times before there was modern chemistry and the periodic table.
\n
It was also linked to philosophy and astrology with ancient practioners studying a way to turn everyday objects into things of worth and value. The examples of this that everyone quotes is attempting to turn a boring heavy metal like lead into valuable gold and searching for a life enhancing and prolonging elixir for all.
\n
The overall premise for the Alchemists is that they believed religion, astrology, substances , magic and even peoples minds were inextricsbly linked and they searched for these links and the ways they are connected together. Studies were popular in Europe but also further afield in the Middle east and parts of Asia.
\n
Harry Potter and the philosophers stone? The philosophers stone was one fabled holy grail of which the Alchemists were trying to create, they thought all knowledge and power could be gained from discovering its secrets.
\n
By the early 17th century, chemistry and the study of substances had become more as we know it today, and the properties of substances were studied deeply rather than trying to just connect them to secret and ancient knowledge. By the time the periodic table was being developed by Russian chemist, Dimitri Mendeleev in 1869, the days of Alchemy were all but over and they themselves fell into folklore.
\n
But thats not quite the end of the story, as in 1980, as if in homage to the alchemists of yore, American physicist Glen Seaborg did in fact find a way to turn a tiny amount of bismuth into gold.
\n
It did however need the help of a nuclear reactor to do so, and the process was far more complex and expensive thsn simply mining or recycling it, but it does make you wonder if those old alchemists might not have been so barmy after all and that there really could have been something in their ancient knowledge!
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fk8t2gkl5","appParentAuthor":"ishewole","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
