These antibodies bind to the thyroid tissue, and attract lymphocytes producing an inflammation known as autoimmune thyroiditis.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The causes of autoimmune thyroid disease are not known, it is believed that genetic predisposition plays a role as an environmental cause (it could be an infectious agent, a toxic agent, an exposure to thyroid proteins - for example in pregnancy-) .</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Autoimmune thyroiditis is a chronic condition, sometimes in the same patient can be the two sides of the coin: hypo and autoimmune hyperthyroidism, but it is very unusual to occur hyperthyroidism when the first manifestation has been 'hypothyroidism.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>There are other causes of hypothyroidism:</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Subacute thyroiditis (of a non-autoimmune nature) is thought to be viral.
