I'm sorry you're in a stressful position at the moment, but it's not irreversible. Not for you or for them. Where to start? Get educated. Understanding how the body works and why certain foods do and do not benefit our bodies is vital to success. You'll view food in a unique way, once you understand what it will do to and/or for you! I recommend reading Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen's book You on a Diet.. These brilliant men are masters of making complicated issues make sense. Start there.</p>\n<p>The next step I recommend you take is to sit down with your family and talk about your new priorities. Have a heart to heart. Let them know that you've been concerned with your family's overall lack of fitness and you think it's important to make positive changes. Let them know that you'll be learning along side them, and that you'll also be making these sometimes tough changes. Focus less on body size and more on health. Be sweet, but be firm. You're the parent, and honestly ... this is probably going to turn out to be the nicest thing you've ever done for the whole lot of you.</p>\n<p>Next ... start making changes. Clear those cabinets of the crackers, cookies, white flour or sugar based products. Dump the ice cream, whole milk, sodas, and juices too. Butter definitely has to go. Refill them with produce, lean protein, lean dairy, whole grains and legumes. Make the changes Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen suggest and you'll be moving in the right direction for sure!</p>\n<p>Exercise too! Oh yes, you're going to have to do some of that. Try not to tackle a marathon right away, but definitely get moving. Enroll the kids in sports or fun programs at your nearby gym, and do some sweating while they are. Train most days of the week. Right now, that means at least four days. Stick with four for a bit and then work your way up to six days.</p>\n<p>Being fit is a lifestyle. It's not about being on the cover of a magazine in a bikini ... it's about living well and living long. I imagine it's a bit scary to look at your children and see physical proof that their bodies are growing in an unhealthy way. The most important job you have as a mother is to protect your children from harm. Fast food, desserts, and extended periods in front of a television can be harmful. No one wants to outlive their children. If you make these important changes on their behalf today ... you may avoid ever having to endure that experience in the future.
