Life doesn't play fair and humans are by nature selfish. Humans are masters of the art of gambling. For me, every help you render someone is a help you gave yourself. It doesn't necessarily mean that the same people you helped must have your back even though we would like it to be so. There are times help have to come from another source.

I'll give you an instance.

Some years ago, I still was in school. I had an aunt then who was very generous with giving. She had two kids and own a boutique. From time to time, she called on me to assist with sales at her shop or assist with looking after her kids. She used to give me things, money and clothes.

At some point, I had to live with her and go to school from her house. Honestly, I wasn't coping well with the stress and my academics started to suffer. In final year, I decided to move out of her house so I could focus on my studies without having an extra year.

I noticed that her attitude towards me changed. She stopped giving me things because I stopped being useful to her. Her loyalty stopped where my commitment stopped. And then, it kept me wondering why she was giving me things back then. It was a bait to draw me close so that she could use me to her benefits. I'm not sad at all. My only pain is that she keeps saying it is better to be useful than to be useless. That's a fact right. But in other words, if I'm not useful to her, then I'm useless. I had to call it a quit and withdrew from her.

People think in terms of future investments even in relationships. It hurts but that's the truth. Nobody wants to put resources and efforts where they wouldn't make gains. That's human nature and that is life.
