I could sit in the gym all day and lift if there was a buffet in the corner, but I get incredibly bored with running and using the elliptical. Specifically though, I want to start running on a regular basis but a means to pass the time. Is there some sort of secret motivator or means to pass that time that runners use that I'm simply not aware of? Whenever I start running, I never find myself stopping because I'm tired (assuming I'm running at a moderately comfortable pace and not sprinting or overdoing it), I simply find myself stopping because I'm outright bored and can't occupy my mind long enough to pass more than 10 minutes or so. Any suggestion on this one runner-goons?","appDepth":1,"musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"question"}" |

In fact most runners have had those moments when they’ve really questioned why they started running.
\n
Here are some tips to help you start loving running:
\n
1. Figure out what you really don’t like. And try to change it. Some people automatically say that that hate running, but may not think about WHY. Do you get bored? Do your legs get tired? Do you get out of breath easily? Do you feel self-conscious about running? Consider the reasons why you may not have liked running in the past and start planning steps to take that will fix those issues.
\n
2. Banish boredom. Even long-time runners admit to getting bored while running, especially when running on the treadmill. But they use strategies to prevent the boredom from getting to them. From listening to music or audiobooks, to doing fun interval workouts, to exploring new running routes, there are so many ways to break up the monotony.
\n
3. Breathe properly. Some new runners give up on running because they can't get into a rhythm and feel like they’re always out of breath. If your breathing is too shallow, you’re not going to feel relaxed, and you may get an annoying side stitch.
\n
4. Build your time and distance slowly. Don’t try to do too much too soon. You’ll get discouraged and probably continue to dislike running. Try using the run/walk technique, where you run for a short segment and then take a walk break. As you continue with a run/walk program, try to extend the amount of time you're running and reduce your walking time.
\n
5. Strength train. It’s amazing how many people I’ve talked to who have said building more muscle has increased their enjoyment of running. After working on developing better core and leg strength, they say that running feels easier. Many running injuries, especially knee and hip-related problems, develop because of muscle weaknesses or imbalances, so doing regular strength training can help make you more injury-resistant. Try some of these strength-training workouts for runners.
\n
6. Run with others. Running with a group or one buddy is one of the best ways to stay motivated to keep running. You’ll focus more on the enjoyment you get from the social interaction, and hopefully forget that running isn’t your favorite thing. You can also try talking to other runners about why they love running. You may discover positive aspects about running that will increase your enjoyment of the sport and motivate you to keep going. Being a part of a larger running community at large will help you feel more connected to the sport.
\n
7. Build your confidence. Some people don't want to run in public because they think they'll look slow, silly, too fat, too old to other runners or people driving by. Try not to don't worry about what people think, and be proud of yourself for working on improving your health and fitness. Take steps to boost your confidence, like working on the proper running form and getting some running gear so you'll feel more comfortable.
\n
8. Use humor. Humor may help get you motivated to keep going. Whether you dislike running ALL the time or just occasionally find yourself hating it, you may be able to relate to (or at least laugh at) these quotes for those who hate running.
\n
9. Mix things up. If you're always running on the treadmill or the same route all the time, try shaking up your routine by doing some speedwork or play some mind games while you're running. Or try a fun race that's different from a regular 5K, such as a relay race or a mud run.
\n
10. Celebrate your progress. Regular rewards for your running progress will most likely improve your motivation and help you embrace running more. Get yourself some new running gear after you’ve reached a major goal, or celebrate with a massage.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f3dmcw4cw","appParentAuthor":"kaypace","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

No need to invest in a pair of sneakers at 150 € to start. Some sports shops (Decathlon for example) offer excellent models of entry, from 40 €. They are technical, comfortable and stylish, the best to start! Also buy a nice sports outfit to feel comfortable and not too hot or too cold. An armband can also be useful. I see some runners with the laptop in hand and I think it must not be very nice!
\n
You are equipped, you are in good conditions to start!
\n
Running outdoors
\n
I have already tried to run in the carpet room ... My god, I hate it! I'm bored, it smells like tramp ... Try to run outside! In town or in the country, there is always a way to find beautiful courses. It's motivating and appreciative to have a beautiful landscape to watch. Me, I love running on the banks of the Seine (at night, it's magic) and see all these incredible monuments. Try to find a nice course in your city. You can also enjoy a holiday to start the race in a more \"nice\" place: seaside, small country lanes, mountain for the bravest! You will have a positive experience of running.
\n
Fight boredom
\n
I think the phrase I hear most often from running haters is \"I'm bored\" !! I understand ! We must find ways to take care of running! There are plenty! Here are some ideas:
\n
\n
Running with a friend and chatting along the way
\n
Make an absolutely great playlist to listen to. (Running with music is essential for me !!)
\n
Listen to podcasts on a topic that fascinates you
\n
If running in basic endurance is too boring for you, try the split!
\n
\n
Start slowly
\n
I want to draw attention to the fact that it is important to start slowly (in speed and in race time). I alternated running and walking the first time and it was very effective!
\n
Have a goal
\n
I keep the best for last, it's having goals. Start a challenge !! For me, the first was to run La Parisienne. 6km at the time, it seemed inconceivable! It took me 6 months to run that distance, but I did it. I was very proud. Meeting a challenge and achieving a goal was a huge source of motivation. I had a reason to go running. I chained with a 10km a month later, a half marathon after 4 months and a marathon two years later!
\n
Come on, it's up to you. What will be your next challenge in running?
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f3dmcw4cw","appParentAuthor":"kaypace","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
