Mine was because I had been laid off from work for a time and hers was because she had been living alone for a while. Mine was much greater than hers, but as we were planning on being together for a while, we both took it on.</p>\n<p>I was able to get us a balance transfer loan from our credit union and pay off most of the credit cards in a single payment. </p>\n<p>We then kept the credit cars enabled, but locked in a safe a home so we would not use them. We didn't cancel any of them though.</p>\n<p>Then we slowly began paying off the balance transfer loan. Because the rate was so good we were able to pay more than the monthly amount each time and still be paying less than we had been on the credit cards. We paid the loan off two years early and were both financially sound moving into our marriage.</p>\n<p>A short time ago we bought a new house and because of the steps we had taken earlier in our relationship, our credit was impeccable and we were able to get a fantastic rate on the house.</p>","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"pkjfwc28x","appParentAuthor":"kilishi","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

I wouldn't have taken the chance initially but the building company helped sweeten the deal. I did take it and have never looked back. </p>\n<p>That house doubled in value over 5 years and got me rolling financially. There are some chances in life that you need to take to get forward and that was one of them. </p>\n<p>Since then I went on to purchase a bigger house and that is the core of my investments.
