A person who shows signs of infatuation or fixation with a subject/object, or displays traits such as perfectionism, does not necessarily have obsessive-compulsive disorder, a specific and well-defined condition.</p>\n<p>Obsessive-compulsive disorder has a lifetime prevalence of about two per cent in the general population, generally runs a chronic course, and is often associated with a significantly reduced quality of life. The disorder is characterised by persistent intrusive thoughts which the sufferers try to compensate for by repetitive ritualized behaviour.</p>\n<p>Like depression, eating disorders and other mental diseases, Obsessive-compulsive disorder is treated with antidepressants. However, the drugs are non-specific, that is why they are not tailored to the respective disease.
