We all need internet, not only for entertainment but for business purposes. A lot of businesses are depending on internet. </p>\n<p>Some countries see this as a great opportunity to make money. I don't want to name any country but there was a case not so long ago, the government in a country has decided to tax the internet providers, which meant they had to collect the tax from the consumers. This has caused a public rage, people went out to protest, which led to violence and the law was withdrawn. </p>\n<p>I don't believe internet is ever going to be free, but I do believe it's going to be cheaper in the future. And we have to mention those countries with high level of illiteracy, where just a tiny part of the population has a computer and in these countries I guess people are paying a lot for the internet. </p>","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"p3dr5e9l5","appParentAuthor":"mistakili","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

You could be asking various different things such as:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Will everyone have access to the internet?</li>\n <li>Will the internet be available at no cost to users?</li>\n <li>Will the internet be uncensored?</li>\n</ul>\n<p>At some point, an even greater percentage of the world will have <em>access </em>to the internet. There will likely always be some people who aren't connected to the Web, but greater than 80% will have access. Telecommunications companies in the US such as AT&T and Verizon have been given money from the government to build the fiber optic infrastructure here, but there's still a long way to go. (This begs the question of whether dial-up, or even DSL can be considered \"access.\")</p>\n<p>There will always be governments such as the one in China that censor the internet so their people can't see specific information. This is used as a tool to control the population. Authoritarian governments aren't likely to give up tools like that as it helps them spread only the message they want, and thus stay in power. </p>\n<p>The internet will <em>not </em>be provided without cost to users. Even if it's a \"necessary\" service, it's one that has a cost to provide. The water and electricity in our houses are necessary for us to live, but they have fees. This is because they have costs associated in order to deliver them, and those costs must be paid by someone. It is possible to have them provided by the government, but that means everyone is taxed more in order to pay for it. </p>\n<p>The world we live in is becoming increasingly connected and increasingly dependent on having an internet connection, but the costs won't go away. More people will have access, but someone will still have to pay for the <strong>maintenance </strong>and the <strong>installation </strong>of the infrastructure necessary to deliver the service. Even once those capital expenditures are paid off, there are still ongoing costs associated with running the network, so the costs will continue. </p>\n<p><em>tl;dr Free internet sounds nice, but nothing is free. Someone always has to pay.
