I always say to people who ask 'what are atheists' like, \"how many wars have been fought or massive atrocities committed in the name of atheism\"?
\n
The answer is always NONE, anyone can be bad but it takes religion to make someone truly evil...
\n
As for atheism itself, its a silly term to be used as a collective noun.
\n
As Chris Hitchins used to say, \"why would we have a term in English for NOT believing in something? Is 'off' on your TV a channel?\"
\n
I still think this holds very true, if one wishes to address a group of people with no religious belief system, they are simple people!! If people wish to be known and defined by their belief system then use Christianity or Islam as a collective noun!
\n
If people ask me who I am, I just say I'm Nathen. If they push questions about my belief system I simply say that I don't have one, or sometimes, depending on the context I might say I'm a Humanist, which means I believe in people and think that every one is born with equal rights to life.
\n
Try getting to know a few people who don't have any religious faith, you may be pleasantly suprised :-)
\n

","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"p3vqvz89x","appParentAuthor":"blessingob","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
