From the individual who decides to live instead of dying, or help live instead of killing to the groups of citizens, companies and institutions that decide to join forces to right a wrong and help the world be a better place, good makes us feel good.
\n
Ironically, doing good deeds or being good seems to be a very difficult thing. The generalized despair we perceive worldwide is the result of much evil being done or being allowed to be done. I remember that some years ago I joined forces with a beautiful team of tree lovers to plant trees at bus stops where the sun was frying people alive. That team was composed of three members, my two daughters (my other two daughters had not come to my life yet) and me. We decided to plant some trees that are very resistant to hot weather, grow fast and provide a generous shade. There were 3 bus stops we chose as pilot spots. My daughters designed a poster that I taped to pieces of wood and planted next to the little trees. We would go every day, twice a day to these bus stops with bottles of water to water these trees. If the plan worked, it would be the beginning of a green revolution, we thought. The poster was neat. It had two side-by-side panels showing first a young kid next to a tiny plant asking people to take good care of it and next a big kid under a shady tree suggesting the tree would protect people from the sun in the near future.
\n
They lasted 3 days. First the posters were dug out and thrown away. We picked them up and re-planted them. Next day they were destroyed. The plants were next. My daughters were devastated. We have not been able to try another initiative like that, but I have tried to keep in them the latent seed of good, of at least not contributing to evil/destructive actions. They love plants, take care of them and do not pollute. There are people out there doing horrible things to trees, animals, and to other people (children, women, elderly). And this is just at a local/micro level; at the global level horrific things are done that cost the world lives, resources and positive energy (the most difficult energy to produce and maintain).
\n
Yet, good thoughts, good words, and good actions keep us afloat. The idea of goodness and the satisfaction derived from doing a good deed is the fuel that inspires the best in us. I don’t know what the stats are in terms of good vs. bad actions, but no matter how many people die in a bombing, earthquake, or epidemic, people clinch to the one who survived, the one heroic action, the one sacrifice. And it is in that good thing that we find the strength to keep going and the passion to be the next good highlight in the tragic newsreel our world has become.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"pk9mx3w3w","appParentAuthor":"owner99","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}"
