<p>Skin sags with age primarily due to loss of volume in the underlying structures, such as soft tissue, fat and bone. There is also collagen and elastin loss in the dermis due to ultraviolet light, as Stan Kusch mentioned.</p><p>Ultraviolet light both slows down deposition of new collagen and activates the enzymes (matrix metalloproteinases) that break down existing collagen.</p>
