The idea is for any project to be able to specify and create a Smart Media Token of their own. Most Steem apps have plans to launch an SMT of their own. Many have already created a token currently existing on a centralized ledger or as an ERC20 token on the Ethereum blockchain in anticipation of the launching the SMT protocol on Steem. At that point, the existing app tokens will continue to exist as SMTs.</p>\n<p>The reason why SMTs have been created is to enable media outlets, for example, to create a token for the purposes of engaging and rewarding their readership.
