In the end, we all end of dead of one thing or another.</p>\n<p>If I had to pick the <em>\"worst disease\"</em> in terms of the human suffering it inflicts, I would opine that it is, hands down, <strong>Alzheimer's Disease.</strong></p>\n<p>My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's almost 8 years ago. My daughter and I quickly turned our dining room into a biological/chemical laboratory. She won more Science Fair Competitions <em>(Local, State and International)</em>, than I can count. Even in Middle School, she was being invited to universities to present her findings. </p>\n<p>And yet, even with all that, we were powerless to stop every aspect of my Mother's identity from slowly slipping away into oblivion. There are many terrible diseases and nothing herein is meant to trivialize the anguish they cause ... but Alzheimer's is in a class unto itself.</p>\n<p><em><strong>What makes you, \"you\"</strong></em> is not your arm, your leg or your heart ... <em><strong>it is your</strong></em> <em><strong>mind.</strong></em> </p>\n<p>Your mind is the sum total of your ideas, ideals and insights, of all the things you have learned and all the things you've come to believe. It is the ineffable transcending the articulate, intangible memories preserved by intangible synapses. Your mind ... <em><strong>is the sum total of what it means to be YOU. </strong></em></p>\n<p>While most diseases rob you of bodily function, Alzheimer's robs you of your very existence, mercilessly erasing all that you have come to mean to yourself and to others.
