json_metadata | "{"app":"Musing","appTags":["Meaning"],"appCategory":"Meaning","appTitle":"In language do you prioritize semantic clarity or syntactic accuracy?","appBody":"
Well, the two of them work together, both the choice and the chain.

There two arguments; Meaning is more important than structure OR Structure is more important than meaning.

Those supporting the idea of Semantic Clarity may have a stronger point because a chain or a structure can be grammatically correct but it is not semantically right but when a structure is semantically right then it will be grammatically correct. Therefore, part of what constitute syntactic accuracy is semantic clarity.

For instance: \"The man assassinated the goat\" is syntactically correct but semantically wrong because of using the word \"assasinated\". Therefore for it to be semantically right, then the word \"slaughtered\" may be the most appropriate to use in the sentence.

Another point supporting semantic clarity is that; a word, which is the basic unit of a syntactic structure could make up the whole structure in some situations. Therefore, choosing to use the word \"Take\" when giving a person a physical item may be more appropriate/semantically right than using lexical items like \"Accept\" or \"Collect\".

Therefore, in a structure more attention is given to the proper choice of words to avoid vagueness or ambiguity, which may lead to misinterpretation.

All these arguments seem to make semantic clarity more important than syntactic accuracy.

But the truth is both are very important. Because in a syntactic structure, it is very easy to lose the whole meaning of a structure when there is any little disconnection in the chain.

Anyway, I think is that they are both very important.

Thanks very much.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fkddnmd4x","appParentAuthor":"rasamuel","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

Same thing happens when i try to speak or write in english. But if i have to choose then i think semantics is of much more importance.

The reason being, when us, humans started talking or invented speech as a method of communications it was only to survive. Communication as a method of warning or comforting each other or to express feelings was the sole purpose. And in situations like that being able to deliver a message was sometimes the thin line between life and death. Syntax was nonexistant. Only the meanings mattered.

Obviously, now at the peak of civilization language has taken many forms. And every one of those forms are different from each other. We get entertained using language. In our private moments language brings is closer. Even in those scenarios syntax is only for the aesthetics until it starts to hurt the semantics.

Now im not saying that you should avoid one and choose the other. That would be non productive. If you are writing some kind of literature then syntax would be of utmost priority as it defines the presentation of a sentance or a piece of writing. All im saying is keeping a balnce is the more important while trying to maintain both semantic clarity or syntactic accuracy..

However, all of this is just my personal opinion.. Id love to see a contructive piece that might say otherwise. If anyone is upto that they will be welcomed for doing so.

Cheers
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fkddnmd4x","appParentAuthor":"rasamuel","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
