json_metadata"{"app":"Musing","appTags":["Chemistry"],"appCategory":"Chemistry","appTitle":"Is \"karat\" a unit of measuring the purity of any compound or is it just a factor peculiar only to gold?","appBody":"
Karat is just a measurement of how pure gold is. It is defined as \"parts fine per 24 part whole\". This means that 24 karat is as pure as you get it. For a substance to be considered to be real gold it has to be at least 14 karats - anything lower is considered another metal with gold in it. A 14 karat gold object can have between 58.33–62.50% gold it in, but it will always be written as 14K. 24K is \"pure gold\", requiring it to be at least 99.95 % gold in the alloy.
\n
Here's a full list of the different karats and how much gold they have in them:
\n
\n
58.33–62.50% = 14K (acclaimed 58.33%)
\n
75.00–79.16% = 18K (acclaimed 75.00%)
\n
91.66–95.83% = 22K (acclaimed 91.66%)
\n
95.83–99.95% = 23K (acclaimed 95.83%)
\n
99.95–100% = 24K (acclaimed 99.99%)
\n
\n
The source for that list is Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fineness#Carat
\n
It's also important to keep in mind that there's another word that's pronounced pretty much the same, called carat. This is a measurement unit of mass (weight) that equals 200mg, or 0.2g if you prefer to read it as grams. A 5 carat diamond would weight exactly 1g. This carat unit is used when it comes to gemstones or peals, so a diamond, ruby, emerald, or sapphire would be measured in carats.
\n
It's important to keep in mind that a carat won't tell you anything about the purity of a gemstone, but a real gemstone will be 100 % pure anyway. However, the clarity is measured with inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface defects).
\n
I hope this was clear, and that you now have a good understanding of the differences between a karat and a carat.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fkvkpc985","appParentAuthor":"rasamuel","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}"
