Imo, there is no reason to browse the Terrible Trending Page for inspiration. Except if you want to reduce the quality of the content you are putting out. The only flow TTP has, is the constant flow of low value content being promoted with ridiculous amounts of STEEM/SBD to the top of what should be the promoted page, not trending. That is something an avid Steemian shouldn't strive to do but rather try to ge there organically, which is close to impossible nowadays but serves as great motivation. There are still some whales that greatly appreciate valuable content and will give you their full upvote which, if followed by a couple of their whale/orca friends could, quite possibly, bring you to the TTP.

That said, the only thing TTP is good for, is discovering and getting updates on important projects built on top of the Steem blockchain. They will usually be boosted, either by whales or by bidbots and that's the only reason I use the TTP for.

What one should strive to achieve though, is to constantly work on improving the quality of the posts they are publishing. Doing more research before writing, acquiring knowledge in techniques to convey the message better and have it stick with the readers, demanding engagement from the readers throughout the post and intrigue their minds to the point where they will want to follow you and eagerly await your next post.

I don't believe that having a specific niche will ensure success and that it's something everyone should strive to have. A specific range of subjects or a niche is never, in my opinion going to provide more success than well written, fascinating and thought provoking posts about a wide range of different subjects.

It's not about the niche but, the quality.

You can write about the most popular of niches all you want but, if the article itself isn't thought provoking and well written, chances are that you will never achieve any notable success with it. Instead of trying to stick to a specific niche its better to work on techniques to improve your writing, build your vocabulary and learn how to convey the point/message of your article better (make them pop and deliver them with a punch) and in the most interesting way you can.

Your readers will always appreciate a well written and thought provoking article much more than if you were to post low quality articles about a specific niche.
