Holiness is the presence of God upon a thing. This is contrarywise to what a lot of people think. Holiness is not necessarily a lifestyle. A thorough look at the Bible would provide clear cut definitions.

Let's see the various instances when the word holiness or holy was used.

In Exodus 3: 2-5

Exodus 3:2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3:3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 3:4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 3:5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

The place was called holy because the presence of God was there. Moses was told to pull off Jia shoe because the place was holy, because God's presence was present there.

Also, the mount Sanai was called an holy mountain nexus God's presence had come down upon it.

We are told in Exodus 19 that God's voice came out of them mountain. God also instructions that nobody should touch them mountain. It was an holy mountain, the same mountain God gave the ten commandments.

Also, the ark of God's covenant was called holy because God's presence was upon it. It contained the HOLIES OF HOLIES because it housed God's presence.

In the same vein, the believer is holy not because of an act of his own doing but because God's presence is with him. The presence of Christ in our hearts makes us holy.

Holiness is not a product of how we act but who we have on our inside. Yet, there's an outworking of holiness. We live holy because of who we have on our inside. It's like a cow produces milk because of these glands for milk present in it.

We house holiness and thus live holy lives. But, the bottomline is that we are holy not because of what we do but because we have Christ indwelling us.
