She passed away recently, this year after suffering from dementia for about four years.
\n
When I married and we started to live with my in-laws as is the custom in India, it was difficult at first because she would not allow me to do anything. I guess she was insecure and afraid that I would soon replace her. I did not force or push her at all. She slowly realized that I respect elders and never would think even of hurting her.
\n

\n

\n

\n
She helped me a lot in raising my son and even sorted out marital problems. I am sure, without her help, my husband and I would not have had a good relationship at all and would have separated.
\n
Mother in laws can be difficult but we should not develop pre-determined attitudes towards them and be biased that they will cause trouble. Every human being, in my opinion yearns for love and respect and if you show it towards even your enemy, you will win their trust, love and respect sooner than you know.
\n
Times will be hard, with mother in laws will be suspicious, will not trust you even if you say you are ready to give your all and will never be satisfied with what you do even if others appreciate it but that is only because they are mothers above all and mothers usually think that only they are the best.
\n
Do not worry, as the years go by, she will soon warm up to you and become your best aide, hopefully. Just let go of that inhibition and start loving her as you would your own mother.
\n
In case, she does not return the love and instead plots against you, that is abuse and has to be reported.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f3yjp853w","appParentAuthor":"purpletanzanite","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
