The concept of \"honor\" on the other hand did not imply anything the same as in Europe. The use of lies, betrayal, deceit and any other stratagem was perfectly valid and was not considered badly if the victory for his lord was achieved. The one that soon was the first shogun Tokugawa I do not doubt in never spying \"ninja\" and ordering hidden murders, in killing the previous heir son of a friend his to obtain the power and other niceties.
\n

\n
Oda Nobunaga, another powerful military leader was so \"fed up\" with a sect of warrior monks that he assaulted the mountain where they lived and exterminated the entire sect including women, children, the elderly and burned all the temples
\n

\n
On the other hand there is a tremendous ignorance about the wars and battles of those times. Both in Europe and in Japan.
\n

\n
The battles were brutal and often without barracks. The samurai used to decapitate their enemies and keep their heads. After the battle, every survivor was persecuted and all the fallen enemies were auctioned off without the slightest look.
\n

\n
A samurai was not \"saving princesses\" or \"defending the weak\". In fact, a peasant or anyone of lower caste who did not show due respect to his rank could be dispatched on the spot without the slightest repercussion.
\n

\n
There is a lot of romanticism on the part of films that mythify reality. They were undoubtedly warriors of honor, but warriors. Capable of the greatest atrocities without batting an eye to the orders of their lord and tremendously efficient in the \"art\" of ending human life
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"p39dt8995","appParentAuthor":"seeee3","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}"
