Some of them even referenced the correct principles, but a few applied them incorrectly. Here's the correct way to do it.
\n
1. Brackets
\n
2. Orders (Exponents and square roots)
\n
3 & 4. Divide & Multiply
\n
5 & 6. Add & Subtract
\n

\n
Image from www.skillsyouneed.com/num/bodmas.html
\n
Now let's start on the equation.
\n
What is 6รท2(1+2) = ?
\n
The first thing you do is deal with the brackets. That means you're simplifying the equation to totally remove the brackets.
\n
Because the only thing in the brackets is addition, do that first.
\n
6รท2(3) = ?
\n
Now you need to remove the brackets entirely. Many of the other commenters jumped to multiplication at this step, but forgot to completely resolve the brackets.
\n
6รท6 = ?
\n
Now that the brackets have been totally removed, you can move to the next step which is to do division and multiplication from left to right. Since there's only one operation, just divide.
\n
6รท6 = 1
\n
Therefore the answer is 1.
\n
6รท2(1+2) = 1
\n
The people who came up with the answer of 9 have incorrectly changed 2(3) to be the same as 2 x 3. Although it IS multiplication, that's an incorrect way to resolve the multiplication operation created by the brackets. Resolve the brackets first (rule #1) and then do the division.
\n
tl;dr Follow the steps correctly and completely and you'll get the answer is \"1.\"
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"fkjudld95","appParentAuthor":"rachel1998","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}"
