Do you think its ok for a person's professional career to be blocked from progress because of something they tweeted over ten years ago?

All actions have consequences and that is something young people tend to forget or not realize when thy do what they perceive to be silly or harmless things.

Just like in politics, your actions many years or decades can come back to haunt you in unforseen or unexpected ways, especially when you decide make public certain acts,.

Twitter and social media in general is becoming a tool that companies are using to vet their employees, both for hiring and on going promotions

Moral and Ethics clauses are becoming more popular and prevalent these days and if you choose to post publicly then you must accept the consequences that follow, whether that be today, tomorrow or years from now.

Bottom line is that the company has the right to decide whatever the justification for not promoting or advancing you.

Why give them any more ammo by posting on social media things might come back to haunt you

It all depends what it is and if their thoughts have changed. 10 years is a long time so I would say no but then I don't know how bad the tweet was.

No I think it's not okay and its very wrong. Ten years is a really long time. To some people it's a life time ago. A lot can happen in ten years. And definitely, it's possible that who the person was when they made that tweet is entirely different from who they are today.

Yeah I think it's not good, neither is it good, but I think it's a tool of check and balance, so I'll say it's definitiely good for me.

First of all I take people occupying a political position, before you can occupy a seat in a political position in most developed countries, a background check will always be conducted even up to what you've tweeted 10 years ago and if it's a malicious tweet that seems incriminating, then you will lose all credibility to occupy such political position.

That's why anybody who is chasing or will chase a career in future that involves running background checks then it's important to tweet with caution and be careful not to post things that may have effect on your career or employment in the future.

That's why I think it's good, it'll curtail the way people abuse the social media

I know all action have consequences but blocking one's journey is not something sounds fair. And when the reason is just some words shared on social media, nearly a decade ago. It's something i don't find relevan. May be he was not that good with words then or his thoughts were a little dumb then, that should not be a thing to judge the person he is now.

He should be Judged on who he is now and what is he sharing currently on Twitte. When i was reading this question i was feeling like it is about james gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy. Who is also a victim of something like that and was replaced from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchis.

Do you think its ok for a person's professional career to be blocked from progress because of something they tweeted over ten years ago?

Everyone should be careful of what they say online. Asking if it ok for a person's career to be blocked from progress for some thing offensive they posted ten years ago is akin to asking If someone should be prosecuted for a crime they committed ten or twenty years ago. I know people make mistakes but we should be careful of the type of mistakes we make. Mistakes made on the internet are hardly forgotten. The moment they are dug out, they would still produce same effects of ten years ago, though that shouldn't be a justification for blocking someone's career progress.
