I believe you need to remove the leaderboard from the points system.

I believe is not designed with the real purpose in mind and do not provide any value. People use it to compete and accumulate points and not exchange them for upvotes.

Why isn't it a real purpose for a leader board to be... a leader board?

Why is it a bad thing at all for people to save up their points instead of redeeming them? They don't expire and it's likely that they will be worth more in the future.
