SMT is less like ERC20s and more like Bitcoin Cash's SLP tokens. The point is that they are easy to make and use for non-developers. ERC20s can also be made by non-developers as well, but many average joes do not know that. ERC20s can do almost anything a developer can think up. SMTs will be very limited, but able to be created without spending large investments on development.
