Thank you, @timcliff! I have so far bought Steem on Poloniex and Bittrex and sent it here. 

It looks like your way is faster since you buy from within your wallet here. Is there also a price difference or any other (hidden) advantages to doing it directly from the Steem wallet? 
I know small things can make a big difference here :)

Most likely you will get a better exchange rate if you use an external exchange like Poloniex or Bittrex. The "in site" tool (BlockTrades) is better for convenience and lower risk.
