I agree with most everything you have written here.  I also agree that at times, the formal instruction sites are pretty useful and will give you a more structured learning process.  In my world, I believe that I learn best by doing projects, having to problem solve inside those projects, and then doing more projects.  These have been my best teachers in almost all I have done.
