Drone delivery is a promising future technology that will be both convenient and a positive development for the economy at large.  Amazon has been at the forefront of this technology for years, and many, myself included have been waiting for the implementation of these plans.  Drone delivery is a frontier for companies and consumers that is fertile ground for profit and technological advancement.

Despite the appeal of drone delivery, the problems and roadblocks that exist for the technology to take off are substantial.  The problems that exist are well summarized in Thoma Frey’s article “37 Critical Problems that need to be Solved for Drone Delivery to become Viable”.  Some major issues include safety, licensing, automation systems, guidance, threat detection, product packaging and more.  There are major hurdles to overcome, legislation and regulations to define and more, but these issues are not unsurmountable.  Power sources and logistics as well as FAA clearance are issues that are being focused on currently.  The technology of the drone and its design are getting better every year, but regulatory requirements are issues needing attention.  An issue that needs to be addressed is liability- what happens when a drone crashes or is maliciously destroyed or used in a crime.  How will the public react if a drone causes injury or damage to property?

In the midst of the issues that drone delivery presents, many opportunities exist.  While it is true that logistics for delivery into apartments, towers and rural areas exist, solutions similar to Amazon lockers and couriers exist.  America has a large number of warehouses that can house items to be delivered when the purchaser has returned home.  Regarding safety and delivery routes, these can be developed over time with regulatory consultation and risk management.  A drone’s path can be managed by AI and former military drone pilots initially, and these will eventually be managed as flying delivery vehicles akin to mail trucks.

Drone delivery’s appeal makes it almost inevitable as a future technology.  Despite the costs and hurdles, people will pay for this convenience.   It may be a novelty at first, but expect to see flying drones delivering standard-size packages in the next 10-years.  Once unthinkable, drone delivery will grow as investment is made by large companies including Google and Amazon.
