It was the same way with our generation here in the US. Most of the world's citizens, especially Gen X and older, were conditioned from a very young age to follow orders and to be worker-bees because the economy needs so many to keep the global economy humming. I think this is one reason it's so hard for many of us to transition into retirement—it's an entirely new way of living. I've heard that during feudal times of the middle ages (9th to the 15th century) peasants had more free time, on average than the modern worker does today. That's really something to ponder!
