A new approach can save up to 95% of the energy lost in pipelines
It was believed that once the flow becomes turbulent, this state is maintained. <strong>Researchers from the Austrian Institute of Technology showed an erroneous opinion.</strong> In their experiments, they destabilized turbulence, returning the flow to a laminar state and thus reducing by 95% the amount of energy needed to pump the liquid through the pipe.

Pipelines are used to transport a wide range of liquids. The energy required for their transfer is about 10% of the world's electricity consumption. Scientists of different countries are looking for ways to reduce this expense item. A significant part of the energy losses is caused by turbulence. Previous attempts focused on local reduction of its level. Now the Hof group approached the question from the other side. Instead of temporarily weakening the turbulence, they decided to destabilize the existing stream, automatically turning it into a laminar flow. In this case, the liquid flows in parallel layers that do not mix.
