It's time again for Three Tune Tuesday, that day of the week where members of the Hive community shares three songs of their liking with the rest of the community.
I take a slow, relaxing approach to Three Tune Tuesday: I like to share pre-1924 78rpm songs from my collection, and record them while playing on an appropriate time-period windup phonograph. I encourage you to take a few moments and slow down with me. Settle down, close your eyes, and take yourself back.. way back.. in time, to a distant uncle's parlour in the early 1920's. There are comfortable seats, pleasant conversation, and old music.
First up this week is a song by Fritz Arndt. Fritz was a pianist and musician in the 1910s and 1920, and was very prolific at that. He authored over 3,000 piano rolls (a piano roll is the device that configures an automatic piano player) as well as a number of songs for others; in particular, he wrote a number of songs for Nora Bayes, one of which, at least, I've played on a previous TTT.
His most famous song is *Nola*, which he wrote for his fiancee-then-wife, Nola, in 1916. It is one of the earlier recorded ragtime tunes.

Following that I've got a fun little tune featuring a cornet and trombone: *Cornet and Trombone Utility Polka*. This particular record is interesting in that it is printed on the Standard Phonograph label and plays on a Standard Phonograph Machine phonograph. The Standard's were built from Columbia Records parts, and the Standard records were made from Columbia masters (indeed, there is a Columbia Record recording of this very same song, which I do not have). The difference is that the Standard Phonograph spindle was much larger than the others of the time and so would be difficult to play on a non-Standard phonograph. Essentially it was the difference between the spindle for a 33 1/3 rpm record and a 45 rpm record.
I do not have an exact date for this record, but it is almost guaranteed to have been made before 1910.

The last song of the week is all accordion based. John J. Kimmel was a German-American musician who played Irish, Scottish, and American music. He billed himself as "the Irish Dutchman." This record, recorded in 1920 is an medley of two Irish jigs and is called, appropriately, Medley Jigs.
