| body | "Australian filmmakers know how to make unusual horror movies and the other day had a great time watching a new film, Bloody Hell, from the talented director Alister Grierson and screenwriter Robert Benjamin.
The first one has a track record of making some very good movies and directing several episodes for TV shows, and the other one is a true master of editing of UFC commercials, shows and documentaries.
Judging by the result - Benjamin was in charge of the project and it turned out (spoiler) pretty damn great!

The 30-year old guy Rex (Ben O'Toole) witnesses a robbery while trying to pick up a cute bank teller, and deciding to interfere, to be heroic, kills the robbers, from what he gets imprisoned for 8 years.
When he got out he found out that he became famous, but he doesn't like this fame. Journalists don't leave him behind, wherever he is there are his fans or his haters, so, having found on his account some money and a valid passport Rex decides to run away to calm and peaceful Finland.
However, his plans for a quiet and peaceful future are ruined by a Finnish family of cannibalistic lunatics at the airport, who are attracted to him for lunch....

Such plot as American tourists in the "wrong place" is very popular among the horror filmmakers, but this couple managed to reconstruct it in a powerful way, blending into a nuclear and incredibly dynamic cocktail of fairy tale, horror, thriller and the blackest comedy, not forgetting to bow to "Rashomon" Kurosawa from time to time and adding a frenetic, if not aggressive editing in the vein of Guy Ritchie.
The concentration of events in the film is insane, but, of course, its main attraction is Ben O'Toole and his roles as the protagonist and his "alter ego", the dialogue with whom does not stop under any circumstances. The constant exchange of barbs, bickering and jokes make this attraction even more insane by its nature, and you want to compare the hero with Ash from "The Evil Dead" franchise, who just as unperturbedly reacted to all kinds of fierce wild things and found very unusual ways out of extremely difficult situations.

Perhaps it is quite appropriate to remember the recent news about the brave Australian surfer who fought off a shark with his own severed leg. Rex is exactly the kind of unflappable guy whose dashing prowess often surpasses common sense, and whose heel, knowing no rest, is constantly on the lookout for new adventures.
It's definitely worth watching, and it would be really cool if the movie got a sequel, or if this creative pair of directors got into action movies or even crazier stories about princesses who need to be rescued from trouble.
