[미국 일상] 자택 근무 첫 날 (03.16.2020)

오늘 월요일부터 메릴랜드 주의 모든 초중고 학교는 강제로 2주간 쉽니다. 제가 다니는 회사도 메릴랜드와 보조를 맞추어 웬만하면 자택근무 하라는 강력한 권고가 나왔습니다. 자가 격리 자택 근무 첫 날이었습니다.

우리 가족만 사는 집이 있어서 참 다행입니다. 아이들이 잠깐이라도 앞 마당에 나가 돌아다닐 수 있어 다행입니다. 그리고 이 집에 아이들이 안들어와도 되는 방이 하나 있어서 또 다행입니다. 컴퓨터를 켜고 어떻게 회사에 있는 듯한 분위기를 내긴 냈습니다. 요새 일이 별로 많지 않아서 다행이네요.

금요일 퇴근할 때 놋북은 챙겼는데, 마우스를 안챙긴 게 후회막심입니다. 금요일 퇴근 때만 해도 이런 분위기 아니었거든요. 자택 근무 강력 권고도 일요일 오후에 나왔습니다. 정말 상황이 시시각각 변하는 것 같습니다.

하지만 사실 저는 잘 체감되지 않습니다. 무서운 게 가까이 있다는 데 도대체 얼마나 가까이 있는 지, 실체가 어떤 지 잘 알지 못합니다. 집 주변은 참 조용하고, 햇볕은 따뜻합니다. 공기는 차지만요.

다만 현재 막내 꼬마는 맑은 콧물을 줄줄 흘리고, 둘째는 머리 아프다고 하고, 저는 열이 조금 있는 것 같은데, 하필 이런 분위기라 괜히 마음이 더 무겁네요.

제가 사는 카운티 (메릴랜드 주를 서울에 비유하면 카운티는 구라고 보시면 됩니다)의 첫 코로나 확진 환자가 지난 금요일에 나왔는데, 지병이 있어 거동이 원활치 못한 80세 할머니랍니다. 그런데 이 할머니가 어떻게 바이러스에 노출되었는 지 모른다네요... 첫 환자부터 이렇습니다. 요새 미국이 이래요.

코로나 걸려본 사람이 독감만큼 힘들다고 하던데 지금 별 문제 없는 걸 보니 괜찮을 것 같습니다 :)

저도 사태 초기에는 심각성을 인지하기 어려웠네요. 지금은 바로 몇걸음 떨어진 아파트에서 확진자가 나오는 수준이라.. 아무쪼록 무탈하시길 기원합니다.
