The robots used a large pressurized drill powered by hydrogen to reach the pockets of natural resources, 5000 feet below the Earth's crust. Because the drill used to dig out these resources was gas powered, the robots had to constantly create new pockets of natural resources, which emitted high levels of radiation, to turn the drill on and off. This isn't a big problem while they stay in the drilling re-entry room, but once the robots have already emerged from the drill and are in the main shaft of the tunnels, the radiation burns out their circuits, killing them. An engineer so old he has been growing facial hair for over four decades decided his solution was something he had always wanted to try, but never had the time for. He named it "Raijin" after an ancient Japanese god of lightning and storm.

The solution? A radiation-absorbing chamber. When placed in the hole, Raijin's power runs down the power cable of the drill, and the whole system sinks down into the tunnels of the Earth. Power losses then occur, but Raijin is so powerful, it could actually generate power for the robot itself for additional power dissipation, and then turn the drill back on.

The engineer had his work cut out for him. Raijin had to be properly made, and all the wiring and pipes and cylinders and connectors had to be installed correctly. This meant a lot of work, but his work was well-rewarded. Raijin was exported around the world and has been used for hundreds of years. Raijin is a very intelligent robot, with a general IQ of 100, but it had no idea what money was, so it worked for the good of its mission.

Not every mission that Raijin undertook went well. Perhaps there would be an unexpected explosion in the drill, or maybe the engineering team would just forget to turn Raijin on to recharge its power nacelle, so Raijin never got any energy. To make matters worse, in a much more recent mission, Raijin accidentally struck a pocket of natural gas, creating an explosion that knocked it out, killing 17 of its kind. The mission room was over sixty thousand miles away from where Raijin was, so nobody was interested in sending an extra robot to rescue it. There was a robot rescue ship, but it wasn't from Raijin's world. It was from the same world as the engineers that dared to send the robot into this dangerous territory.

Nobody knew where Raijin was, and they couldn't afford to send off a rescue mission. Nobody could go out there to look for it or attempt to repair it. At least, nobody could go out there until a very wise Astrobot named Tenchi came along. When it was discovered that the radiation had miraculously not killed off Raijin, Tenchi was called in to attempt to repair the machine. In a risk he was willing to take, with a little help from some humans, Tenchi guided Raijin back to power by entering a network of complex tunnels that led to the hearts of the Earth.

Tenchi's plan was to use the microcrystals of radioactive precious metals buried in the Earth like a multicolored jeweler, helping to rob the Earth of its precious resources, and produce money for human use. It was like the Big Bang for robots.

There was just one problem. Raijin had an eight-inch (20cm) diameter hole in the power nacelle. As far as Tenchi could tell, this hole had been created a few hundred thousand miles after Raijin's activation. It was originally hidden away from the other workers, but it slowly became a problem once the amount of resources being transferred into Raijin's primary robot power intake area reached an additional dozen-thousand kilograms. The powder that was stored inside Raijin's nacelle, which had a purity of 99%, was an especially rare resource, and was helpful during the repairs.

Before Raijin, the robots were not able to extract precious ores and minerals. Often, only 10% of the output was used in the robots, and the rest was lost in the tunnels of the Earth.

The plan was extremely tough on the resource-gathering team, but it was well worth it. The robots were paid in money, and the machines and robots were replaced with more powerful ones, which increased the productivity of their work.

After all the work was done, Raijin was sent back to the Japanese workers, who were renamed as "Astrobots" once they gained their new money. Before Raijin left to its homeland, it was sent back to Earth, to the place where it finally was destroyed. Raijin's power was disabled and crashed onto the floor, hitting the robots around it. Raijin was the only robot left standing after the decommissioning of the other robots. Raijin lay in the corner of the area and deactivated.

The robots were disconnected from power, and Raijin's nacelle was left alone. Raijin's nacelle, now the only thing connecting the robots to the Earth's natural resources, would have been a monument for future generations to uncover. The former energy reserves of the Earth, which Raijin had evacuated, contained billions of dollars in natural resources in different forms.

Raijin lay there, dormant, collecting dust as the robots who had been decommissioned, now dust, no longer cared about.
